Robert Sangster Stakes 2016 race preview

05 May 2016 11:16 AM

Race seven at Morphettville on Saturday is the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes. Fillies and mares run under weight-for-age conditions over 1200m for $400,000 in prize money.

The 1200m course at Morphettville starts at the beginning of the side straight in a chute which then turns into the home straight. Runners have about 600m to run before entering the first and only turn on the course, giving all gates a good chance to find a settling position.

Over the past eight years there is no particular trend that shows any bias towards certain barriers over the course.

The track was rated a Good 4 on Thursday morning and the forecast is for sunshine all the way.

Betting Odds Racing Morphettville

Petits Filou resumes. Was looking like Australia's next sprinting champion as a two year old after winning everything in site before failing at Group 1 WFA level in open company. Started last preparation well against the fillies and then failed miserably against the boys in the G2 Arrowfield finishing 12.6 lengths last. Deserves another chance on the back of the ability she has shown.

Griante was good when winning the G1 Galaxy two starts back. Then followed with a fair effort with 7kg extra on her back. The race pattern may not have suited as much last time and gets weight relief from that run. Strong claims.

Don't Doubt Mamma has put in three solid runs this preparation including a last start win over 1100m in Listed grade coming back from 1400m her two runs before that. She likes to get back so pace will be important for her chances in the big field. Has claims.

Badawiya performed well over 1400-1500m this preparation before failing over the mile in G1 company. Freshened since and back to 1200m where she is 1-1-0 from three starts. Will look to go forward from a wide barrier which shouldn't be an issue with Newitt aboard and 600m of straight to play with before the first turn. Chance.

Scarlet Billows finished 3 lengths behind Flamberge over this distance in the G1 William Ried two starts back. Then followed with a solid win over 1400m last start. Back in distance but her G1 run rates well for this. Can't dismiss.

Tuscan Sling looked to lack a bit of fitness last start after having her first run in a few months. Runs before that were strong including 1200m G3 win over Azkadellia. Unbeaten this distance and should make her presence felt here.

Tempt Me Not comes into contention on the back of her PJ Bell win over Pearls at Randwick last month. Usually goes forward so likely to be some early work from barrier 18. In the mix.

Sheidel is a solid improver after stepping up to win in Listed grade at Caulfield last start. Unbeaten this distance. Look for a big run here.

Miss Promiscuity is having a solid preparation winning her last two starts and putting in a solid run first-up to finish 2.2 length behind Malaguerra at Flemington. Starts very wide but Morphettville gives her hope in this.

Super Cash goes into the mix with honest performances this preparation. Last start third behind Don't Doubt Mumma where she was finishing strongly after struggling to find clear air in the straight says she can do better. In this.

I Love It has to be considered on the back of her efforts in the Schillaci, Alinghi and GH Mumm Stakes last Spring. Those runs rate well for this and she is 3-1-0 from six first-up starts.

Of the others, I like the chances of emergency Jalan Jalan. Looks overs at current quotes of $21 with two solid runs this preparation including a first-up second to Petits Filous and should be fitter for this. Wawail, Vezalay, Runaway Star, Miss Seton Sands and Pittsburgh Flyer are all capable of figuring in the finish.

Tough race this.

1st Girante rates well here on her runs this preparation and the weight relief will work well in her favour. Williams onboard doesn't hurt her chances.

2nd Sheidel. See her improving again on her recent runs. Good chance at odds.

3rd Petits Filous
