QLD Oaks 2017 race preview

02 June 2017 13:14 PM

A good 4 with no rain in the forecast makes happy news for punters on QLD Oaks Day this Saturday. Another bumper card of quality racing is lined up with the three-year-old fillies headlining the day in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks racing over 2200m.

The 2200m starts in a chute at the top of the home straight where runners travel 500m up the the winning post and then complete another circuit of the track.

The last time they raced on a Doomben - good 4 was back on April 15. The track played very fair that day so we're expecting the same again on Saturday.

The key to these 3yo distance races I find is to identify runners who can genuinely run the distance. I've paid particular attention to this point in my analysis.

The Money

Looks to be one of the quietest early markets for a Group One I have seen in a while. Punters not really getting excited about anything in the betting up to Friday morning.

In the betting

#6 Egg Tart - odds fluctuations 10am 2/6 - 3.3, 3.4

Very hard to fault this filly's preparation. Stepping up nicely as she goes further. Especially liked her gutsy G1 Schweppes Oaks win. The one to beat.betting odds QLD Oaks

#1 Kenedna - odds fluctuations 10am 2/6 - 4.6, 4.8

Almost the winner in the G1 Schweppes Oaks after taking some short cuts. Backed up nicely in The Roses with a solid win. Top contender.

#3 Dawn Wall - odds fluctuations 10am 2/6 - 7.5, unchanged

Won easily in listed company almost a month ago. Missed only once before that with excuses on heavy going. Looks a real threat to the top two.

#4 Ana Royale - odds fluctuations 10am 2/6 - 7, 7.5

Looked good behind Egg Tart before relishing the extra distance at her latest outing. Comes back in distance which reads as less than ideal. Chance.

#6 Oklahoma Girl - odds fluctuations 10am 2/6 - 9, 9.5

Comes into consideration on recent runs. She looked like she wanted further two runs back and then made Kenedna work for the win in G2 The Roses. Can't dismiss.

Of the others...

#13 Shenandoah has a case after racing wide and sticking with it to finish 1.6 lengths behind Kenedna in The Roses. Better barrier here and dry track promotes her chances.

#15 Mia Rosa jumped from barrier 14 in The Roses, tracked wide and still managed to finish better than most in the race for a 1.9 length fifth to Kenedna. Had run over 1400m before that. Fitter now and jumps from 5 so expect improvement on that run.

Selections

1st Egg Tart - finding it very hard to go past her here. Rates on top against her rivals.

2nd Shenandoah looks great value at current quotes. She's a genuine chance.

3rd Kenedna
