CF Orr Stakes 2017 race preview

10 February 2017 10:41 AM

Group One racing return's to Caulfield this Saturday with the running of the CF Orr Stakes. The field of twelve will race over 1400m and under weight-for-age conditions competing for over $500,000 in prize money. The track was rated a Good 3 on Friday morning and that shouldn't change with sunshine predicted over the weekend.

The Caulfield 1400m is one of the trickiest for outside barriers with only a short dash until they enter the side straight and so speed map analysis is vital.

The race sees two of Australia's top Group One sprinters Black Heart Bart and Malaguerra meet again. The Valley didn't suit the West Australian galloper last time they met but Caulfield and the extra 200m metres puts a different cast on things. Which one will prevail? Or will the winner coming from outside these top two fancies?

Form Analysis

Black Heart Bart

1. Black Heart Bart gets the conditions he likes best in this race. Three wins and a second from four starts at Caulfield and 6-4-0 from 11 starts at the distance. Strong over the line at the Valley first-up indicates he's ready. Top show.

4. Malaguerra was super fast first-up to win at the Valley. Both 1400m wins have come under stakes grade but looked well equipped for the extra distance when resuming and has a great second-up record. Hard to beat again.

3. Lucky Hussler finished 1.2 lengths away in the Magic Millions Quality when he didn't have a thing go right. Expecting speed in the race which should work in his favour. Has the class to stamp his authority. Contender.

12. Divine Prophet. Very promising three-year-old who is expected to shine this preparation. Finished close enough to Astern in the Golden Rose when he didn't get things his way. Another one who appreciates pace on up front. Trialled well. Expect a big show.

8. Ecuador didn't fire at Group level this distance last year. Recent wins have come in easier grades. Harder here and at weight-for-age.

6. Arod showed what he is capable off when second to Rageese with 5kg extra on his back at his last outing. Prefer to watch first-up.

9. He's Our Rokki won the Group 1 Toorak in the Spring after resuming to win at this track and distance in open company. Reports from his recent jump-out were good and looks ready to take on the weight-for-age challenge.

10. Jameka resumes after a memorable Spring campaign. Finished 1.2 lengths away in the G2 PB Lawrence when fresh last preparation at this track and distance. Tougher task this time.

Of the rest, have to consider Palentino after beating Black Heart Bart over the mile last preparation and Miss Rose De Lago who won the PB Lawrence at her previous go fresh.

Betting Selections

1st Black Heart Bart. There are some quality chances at odds but this bloke gets everything he loves here in this race. Very hard to go past.

2nd Divine Prophet. Expecting big things from this 3yo colt. I will be backing him too. Look for him to be flying home.

3rd Malaguerra. Won't be easily beaten. Strong contender and a must for the quaddie.
