Aurie's Star 2016 Race Preview - Flemington

05 August 2016 10:41 AM

Flemington hosts the Aurie's Star Handicap on Saturday, a handy Group 3 run down the straight over 1200m. The track is currently rated a soft 5 and is likely to improve from there with no rain about over the weekend in Melbourne.

The straight six has become a difficult track for punters to read. Apart from the speed differences between the inside, outside and middle lanes, it can do favours for horses whose running styles suits a wide track with no turns to negotiate.

Ruettiger. His last two starts have been excellent which rates him very well for this contest. Both runs were down the Flemington straight. Two starts ago he got back on the least preferred inside of the track but still finished strongly for a close third. Then last start beat a competitive field to win the Listed Vic Sprint. Hard to beat here.

Sooboog mixed his form a bit earlier this campaign. Last two runs have shown greater consistency. His only two career wins have come on dry tracks which he should get here.

Smart Volatility was good last start in the Listed Ramornie which had some handy horses in it. He led and hung on to win there in a swoopers race. Has won a trial since. Should be competitive.

Mighty Like comes off a first-up win over the Flemington 1200m. Not much harder here and drops 3.5kg. Won two second-up runs from four starts. In this.

Beirut steps up a bit in grade here but is certainly flying after winning her last four outings. Keen front runner with a great record over the distance. First run down the Flemginton straight.

Tashbeeh ran third to Malaguerra last Spring over 1400m. Finished a head away third first-up last preparation in a BM84 at Pakenham. Chance.

Dibyani has his first try at this distance. Ran 3.9 lengths behind Winx first-up last preparation over 1400m. Goes close with a similar effort here.

Magnus Reign finished second to Mighty Like last start with a 4kg weight advantage. Was average the run before behind Ruettiger over the same distance and course as this. Place?

Mr Chard returns after a 64 week lay-off and hasn't won fresh in 9 attempts. Prefer to watch this one.

Just Magical is second-up with a win and place from three second-up attempts. Wasn't bad first-up when he carried 60.5kg in BM78 grade around the tight Moonee Valley course which didn't seem to suit. Ran 1.2 lengths behind Ruettiger over 1200m last campaign giving him 2kg and running wide in the running. Could surprise.

Of the others Escado likely to find this a bit too short and Pheidon is first-up after an ordinary preparation and prefers it a bit further.

1st Mighty Like has a lot going for him here. Should be strong at the end and looks value at $7

2nd Ruettiger

3rd Just Magical
